Tulsipur: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said the party will organize its general convention before the next general election, as mandated by the party statute and national law.
Speaking at the first convention of the Nepal Tharu Association in Tulsipur on Sunday, Thapa emphasized that anyone advocating for a general convention after 2084 BS is going against the party’s constitution and legal framework.
He also revealed that NC will contest the next general election independently, without forming an electoral alliance with any other political party. Thapa further proposed an amendment to the party statute to allow district chapters to decide on election candidates, empowering local leadership over central authority.
“A party does not become strong just because its leader is strong; it becomes robust when its cadres are strong,” he asserted, adding that local units like Dang—not Kathmandu—should decide their own candidates.
On national issues, Thapa dismissed the possibility of reviving constitutional monarchy, saying, “It is not possible. The republican system must be implemented effectively to meet people’s aspirations.”
He acknowledged the growing disenchantment among youth and stressed the need for pro-public policies and responsible behavior from those in power to regain their trust.
Thapa's remarks underline a push for internal party reform, decentralization of power within the NC, and a reaffirmation of the republican democratic system in Nepal.
